The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) of Canada provides limited, temporary health care coverage to specific groups of individuals who are not eligible for provincial or territorial health insurance. The program is primarily designed to ensure that refugees, asylum seekers, and certain other vulnerable groups have access to essential health services while they are in Canada. IFHP only covers individual therapy. It does not cover couple, family and group therapies.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Refugee Claimants: Individuals who have made a claim for refugee status in Canada and whose claim is being processed are eligible for coverage under the IFHP.
- Protected Persons: Individuals who have been recognized as refugees by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) or are protected persons under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- Resettled Refugees: Refugees who have been resettled to Canada through government-assisted programs or private sponsorships.
- Victims of Human Trafficking: Temporary residents who have been identified as victims of human trafficking.
- Other Eligible Groups: Certain individuals who are eligible under special programs or circumstances as determined by the Canadian government.
The coverage provided under the IFHP can include services such as basic health care (e.g., doctor visits, hospitalization, psychotherapy), prescription drugs, limited dental and vision care, and coverage for the cost of immigration medical examinations. However, the specific services covered can vary based on the category of the individual and their specific needs.
To receive free counselling or psychotherapy services covered by the insurance company (Medavie Blue Cross), a referral from a medical professional, such as a medical doctor or a nurse practitioner, is typically required. This referral ensures that the insurance provider recognizes the necessity of the mental health services and approves coverage accordingly.
Mego Nerses collaborates with a medical clinic and can assist in facilitating a referral if you need access to a medical professional.
